Jamaican doctor appointed Ethicist at Caribbean Public Health Agency

Dr Derrick AaronsKINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaican Dr Derrick Aarons has been appointed Ethicist for the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) which is based in Trinidad and Tobago.

Dr Aarons is a family and palliative care physician specialising in the care of individuals with advanced terminal disease, and in 2005, he became the Caribbean's only trained bioethicist, after receiving his doctorate in the field of Bioethics and Experimental Medicine from McGill University in Canada.

Bioethics is the discipline concerned with the moral issues, including moral decisions, conduct and policies surrounding the life sciences and health care.

Dr Aarons who took up his new position last week practiced his trade mainly in Ocho Rios, St Ann and is a regular contributor to the Jamaica Observer’s health pages.
