CRN Celebrates its 18th Anniversary

CRN Anniversary

(Trinidad and Tobago)-- The Caribbean Regional Network of People Living with HIV (CRN+) celebrated its 18th Anniversary as a full and equal partner in the collaborative fight against HIV/AIDS on Sunday, 28 September 2014.

Under the theme “Celebrating Strides, Celebrating Life, Celebrating the Future,” CRN+ affiliates in various countries across the region hosted brief celebration ceremonies. These ceremonies celebrated three key areas. First, celebrating the strides made in overcoming the fear of living with HIV, the development of antiretroviral drugs to treat HIV and the research conducted to find a cure for HIV. Secondly, celebrating the lives of those who have impacted the response through their commitment to research and by raising awareness of the virus and of people living with HIV (PLWH) in a positive way. Finally, celebrating the future of getting to zero: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.

Each ceremony culminated with the release of 18 red balloons symbolising 18 years of CRN+.  During the release of balloons, messages of reflection and celebration submitted by board members and affiliates were recited.

Dr. Clive Dottin, Pastor/Field Secretary of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Trinidad made a few brief remarks at the CRN+ Trinidad celebration. He stated, “Everyone has a responsibility to get involved in the fight against HIV.” He pledged his continued support to involve CRN+ affiliate member, COMTALK International, as a yearly participant in providing HIV/AIDS awareness during “Hands Across the Caribbean.”

The CRN+ Trinidad celebration was included as part of the Seventh Day Adventist Hands Across The Caribbean, New Start Health Programme, which is an annual activity aimed at empowering individuals to make healthy choices.

The CRN+ anniversary activities were planned and executed in partnership with the CRN+ Secretariat and affiliates. This year’s activities saw participation from CRN+ affiliate organisations and support groups in the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.

CRN+ is currently a sub-subrecipient of the Global Fund Round 9 Grant Phase II grant achieved through the proposal made by the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP). Under this grant, CRN+ is providing support to its affiliates in 15 countries under the objective “An enabling environment that fosters universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.”
